Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has formed two committees including Innovation Council ‘ Kaya Kalp’ headed by Ratan Tata the former Tata Group Chairman.
The other committee formed under former DIPP secretary Ajay Shankar to revive ministry’s public private partnership cell to get private investment.
The Public Private Partnership (PPP) cell plays a critical role in the growth of Indian Railways as getting funds for new projects has become a challenge. Shankar had worked with Prabhu in power ministry earlier.
“Shankar had played a key role in preparation and enactment of the Electricity Act, 2003. He had formulated the rules and policies under the Act and also conceived rural electrification project when Prabhu headed the power ministry in Vajpayee government,” a government official said.
On the other for Tata “It is his personal rapport with the industrialist that worked for railways,” the official said.
Railway Minister Prabhu has announced in the railway budget that Kaya Kalp – literally meaning transformation – and hinted that a “big name” will head it. The minister had already approach Tata before the budget for this subject but had not got a confirmation.
Tata visited Prabhu on Tuesday at the minister’s Railway Bhawan office in Delhi and has given his consent to head the committee.
