Reliance Jio Replaces Airtel As Sole Service Provider To Indian Railway

The Indian Railways which is the largest and most sought-after accounts in telecom in the country will now be served by Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. from Jan. 1, with the state-runned transporter’s total cost likely to be cut by around 35%.

Bharti Airtel Ltd. has been the telecom provider for 1.95 lakh mobile phone connections used by Railway employees in closed user group across the country for over a course of 6 years for which the railways was charged around Rs 100 crores per year in bills.

A Railway Board order issued on November 20 that it “had assigned the responsibility to RailTel (railway public sector unit) for finalisation of fresh CUG scheme for Indian Railways as the validity of the existing scheme is expiring on Dec. 31, 2018. Fresh CUG scheme had since been finalised by RailTel and Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited has been awarded the contract to implement the scheme.”

It will come into effect from Jan. 1. CUG is a supplementary service provided by the mobile operators to subscribers who can make and receive calls from any member associated within the group. This service is applicable for SMS also.

Reliance Jio, Under the scheme, will provide free of charge 4G/3G connections and calls to the subscribers of the services.
