Supreme Court Issues Notice To Rcom Chairman Anil Ambani

The Supreme Court bench headed by Justice RF Nariman, today, issued a notice to Reliance Communication Ltd (RCom) chairman Anil Dhirubhai Ambani and others on a contempt petition filed by Ericsson India over non-payment of its dues. The court has given four weeks of time to Anil Ambani and others to file a response.

Rcom, in its regulatory filing, stated “The Hon’ble Supreme Court has given 4 weeks’ time to file its response to the contempt petition filed by Ericsson. Thereafter, Ericsson has been given one week’s time to file its rejoinder. The matter will be taken up for hearing thereafter.”

A Reliance Communications Limited spokesperson also said, “RCOM has deposited a partial payment of Rs 131 crores to Ericsson from the operational funds available with the Company. RCOM has taken all required steps towards enabling the settlement and remains fully committed to make the payment to Ericsson from the proceeds of the Spectrum sale.”

Senior Advocates Kapil Sibal and Mukul Rohatgi, while appearing for RCom, asked the court to accept Rs. 118 crores towards outstanding dues to Ericsson India to establish its bona fide. However, the lawyers appearing for Ericsson rejected RCom’s counsel offer and requested the entire outstanding sum of Rs. 550 crores to be deposited.

The RCom was later directed by the Supreme Court bench to deposit the Rs. 118 crores as demand draft in the registry.
