According to the Tata Motors Ltd top official, the automaker is planning to discontinue its small family car, Tata Nano, after the BS-VI standards norms comes into effect from April 2020. The Ratan Tata’s dream car, which was launched in 2009 with an initial price of about Rs one lakh, has been performing poorly for a past couple of years.

Mayank Pareek, President of Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors in a press meet said, “in January new safety norms came, in April some more new norms will come and in October new safety norms will come and BS-VI is going to happen from April 1 of 2020, so all products may not meet (BS-VI norms) and we may not invest in upgrading all the products…Nano is one of them.”

Pareek also indicated that some of the other Tata Motors existing products would also be discontinued, however, he did not specify them except for the Ratan Tata’s brainchild ‘Nano’. The current development is due to the Supreme court’s BS-VI guidelines which restrict registration of cars other than BS-VI.

He also added that there are 5 or 6 passenger vehicles in Tata Motors that will be refurbished and modified as the stocks should become zero by April 1, 2020, when the Supreme Court’s  BS-VI guidelines come in effect. Pareek also said during the last 36 months, Tata Motors outperformed the market.
