Tragedy At Steel Authority of India Limited’s Bhilai Plant

A blast took place in the Bhilai plant, operated by the state-run Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) in which, at least six people were killed and 14 injured. According to PTI, the blast occurred in a pipeline near the coke oven section of the plant, as mentioned by a Police official.

The Bhilai plant is situated around 30 km from the state capital Raipur.  A local police official told PTI that Police personnel and a rescue team rushed to the steel plant, adding that the injured were taken to a local hospital.

According to the company’s statement, the fire took place around 10.30 am in a gas pipeline of Coke Oven Battery Complex No 11 during a scheduled maintenance job at the plant, adding that the fire had been controlled. In June 2014, six people were killed and more than 30 injured in an explosion at the Bhilai steel plant.

Inspector General of Police (Durg Range) G P Singh said, “So far, 9 persons have lost their lives and 14 are undergoing medical treatment. All resources have been mobilized to provide adequate care to the injured,” as per PTI.

According to preliminary information, over 24 employees were working at the spot when the accident occurred, said. Police personnel and a rescue team rushed to the spot, he said, adding, all the victims were being taken to a local hospital.

SAIL released a statement, stating,  SAIL collective stands by the families of the affected and will ensure that and no stone is left unturned in providing all kinds of support.
