$1.2 Trillion PM Gati Shakti Plan to Compete with China

The project Gati Shakti is about making the flow of goods and manufactured components easier across the length and breadth of the country.

Under a 100-trillion-rupee (USD 1.2 trillion) mega project called PM Gati, Modi’s administration plans to create a digital platform that combines 16 ministries. The platform will offer companies and investors a one-stop solution for the design of projects, seamless approvals and easier estimation of costs.

As per the ministry of commerce and industry, the mission is to implement projects without time and cost overrun. The objective is to ensure that global companies choose India as their manufacturing centre.

Fast-tracking projects will likely give India an advantage in diversifying businesses and supply chains, especially with China. Notably, Asia’s third-largest economy offers cheap labour and a talent pool of largely English-speaking workers.

The way to compete with China is to be as competitive on the cost as you can be. The project Gati Shakti is about making the flow of goods and manufactured components easier across the length and breadth of the country. The project’s main pillars are identifying new production clusters and linking those sites seamlessly to the nation’s railway network, ports and airports.

As per Invest India, the said plan envisages modelling infrastructure projects along the lines of what Europe did after the Second World War or what China did between 1980 and 2010 to raise the nation’s ‘competitive index’.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (PMGS-NMP) on 13th October 2021 to provide multimodal connectivity infrastructure to various economic zones.
