President Joe Biden said that the United States is about to finish evacuations from Afghanistan by Aug 31 but may have to extend the deadline. The pullout depends on cooperation from the country’s current rulers. The Taliban had said on Tuesday that all foreign evacuations from the government need to be completed by Aug 31.

Biden said the United States is rushing to meet that deadline as the threat rises of militant attacks. “The sooner we can finish, the better. Each day of operations brings added risk to our troops,” Biden said.

Biden has asked the Pentagon and the State Department to make emergency plans to evacuate before the deadline. The Pentagon said many US troops had left Kabul following a previously scheduled program, but it will not change evacuation efforts. Some Democrats in the US Congress argued the evacuations must be completed despite the target date.
