US citizens can now choose a different company’s vaccine for that next booster shot, federal health officials said. People who got the Pfizer vaccine are eligible for a booster, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has noted that Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines qualify too for booster shots.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had already approved such an extension of the booster campaign on Wednesday. CDC Director Dr Rochelle Walensky said, “These last 20 months have taught us many things, but mostly to have humbleness. We constantly know about the coronavirus, improving the evidence base and collecting more data.”

People are requested to get a booster if they are 65 or older and at raised risk of acute disease because of health problems. About two-thirds of Americans are suitable for Covid-19 booster shots. The health authorities are hoping that boosters will give immunity against milder coronavirus infections, and all the vaccines still offer powerful protection against hospitalisations and death.
