The government collected more than Rs 8 lakh crore from taxes on petrol and diesel in the last three fiscal years, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed Parliament on Tuesday. She answered the questions on the hike in excise duty on petrol and diesel and the details of the revenue earned from different taxes on these fuels.

The excise duty on petrol advanced from Rs 19.48 per litre to Rs 27.90 per litre. The taxes on diesel rose from Rs 15.33 per litre to Rs 21.80 per litre, Sitharaman said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. “The excise duties including revenues collected from petrol and diesel during the last three years are Rs 2,10,282 crores in 2018-19; Rs 2,19,750 crores in 2019-20 and Rs 3,71,908 crores in 2020-21,” Sitharaman added.
