According to government figures released on Wednesday, India’s fiscal deficit, or the shortfall between revenue and expenditure, was 3.41 lakh crore from April to July, or 20.5 per cent of the full-year target.

The fiscal deficit for the same time period in 2017 was 21.3 per cent of the goal for FY22. It displays the total amount of borrowing the government will require.

According to government statistics, the government’s total receipts—taxes included—were $7.85 trillion, or 34.4 per cent of the BE for 2022–23. It was almost identical at 34.6 per cent during the same time last year.

The Controller General of Accounts (CGA) figures showed that net tax receipts were 6.66 lakh crore and total expenditure was 11.27 lakh crore.

The country’s fiscal deficit is anticipated to be 6.4 per cent of GDP for the current fiscal year ending in March 2023, down from 6.71 per cent in the prior year.

In contrast to the Budget forecast of 6.4 per cent, SBI Research predicted that India’s fiscal deficit would be closer to 6.5 per cent of GDP in its weekly report.

“A record amount of GST income has been generated, and this substantial tax collection has been made possible by increased compliance and increasing economic activity. In terms of spending, the government has increased capital spending, which is good news for our growth potential, “stated the report.

In order to stop growing inflation, the government has announced many measures this fiscal year, including cuts to oil excise taxes, more fertiliser, and gas subsidies, all of which will raise spending.

The budgetary situation is likely to be improved by the windfall gain tax and increased tax revenue due to the GST over, and beyond the budget, it was said.
