Italy Fines OpenAI 15 Million Euros for Privacy Breach

OpenAI
The $300 billion deal highlights OpenAIโ€™s push for computing power.

Italy’s privacy watchdog has fined OpenAI 15 million euros ($15.58 million) after concluding an investigation into the use of personal data by ChatGPT.

Italy’s privacy authority, Garante, fined OpenAI 15 million euros for not having proper legal grounds to process personal data used to train ChatGPT.

The Garante found that OpenAI violated the principle of transparency and failed to meet user information obligations.

OpenAI did not respond immediately but has previously stated that it believes its practices comply with EU privacy laws.

Last year, Garante temporarily banned ChatGPT in Italy over concerns about privacy breaches, but the service was reinstated after OpenAI made changes, including giving users the right to refuse consent for data use in training algorithms.
