India and US Poised to Chart Trade Deal Roadmap During PM Modi’s Washington Visit

Indiaโ€™s public procurement market is estimated at $700โ€“750 billion annually.

Bilateral trade will be a key focus as PM Modi travels to Washington DC after the AI Summit in France for talks with US President Trump.

Donald Trump will host a dinner for PM Modi at the White House on 12th February, followed by one-on-one and delegation-level talks the next day.

Key US CEOs will meet PM Modi on the same day, and there may be an Indian community event during his visit, though details are not finalised.

Bilateral trade stood at $191.8 billion in 2022, with India enjoying a $35 billion trade surplus.

Trump has previously criticised the trade deficit with India, referring to the country as a “tariff king.”

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal expressed hopes for a forward-looking economic partnership and fair trading arrangements between both nations.

India may offer to purchase more US defence equipment, including C-130 Hercules and P-8I maritime patrol aircraft, to help reduce the US trade deficit.

India may also express interest in buying more crude oil and LNG from the US.

A mini-trade deal was almost finalised in 2020, but the Biden administration shelved it. Some officials in the current administration favour an early trade agreement.
