Tejas Networks Ltd on Wednesday, 30 April announced that it has partnered with Intel to bring direct-to-mobile (D2M) functionality to laptops, aiming to revolutionize access to education across India.

According to an exchange filing, this integration will enabled in Intel-powered laptops that will allow students nationwide to receive educational content using artificial intelligence (AI) without relying on internet connectivity.

The D2M technology, developed as part of a proof-of-concept at IIT Kanpur, utilizes terrestrial TV broadcast signals to transmit live TV, videos, audio, and text-based messages directly to mobile devices and computers. This content can include entertainment, sports, educational materials, and emergency alerts, all without the need for Wi-Fi or mobile data.

The laptops are powered by Intel processors and feature a built-in antenna integrated with Tejas-Saankhya’s SL-3000 SDR chipset, which supports D2M services. Tejas Networks has also created a full suite of infrastructure solutions, which are both hardware and software for deploying D2M networks.

The SL-3000 chipset-powered technology has already undergone testing on live networks through collaborations with Prasar Bharati, IIT Kanpur, and Tejas Networks over the past few years.

Parag Naik, the executive vice-president of Tejas Networks, said, “D2M is a scalable, cost-effective and resilient system that ensures inclusive, high-quality learning.”

Gokul Subramaniam, President of Intel India and Vice President of the Client Computing Group, noted that this technology opens up new avenues for delivering content through personal computing and edge devices.

Shashi Shekhar Vempati, Chairperson of the UGC Committee on Educational Media Reforms, added that the initiative supports the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 by promoting inclusive and equitable education while helping bridge digital access gaps across the country.
