Canada Takes Cautious Steps to Mend Ties with India Amid Mixed Signals in Ottawa

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand said Ottawa is cautiously working to repair Canada-India ties. This effort comes nearly two years after a diplomatic fallout over the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Anand recently spoke with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and stated that the process will move β€œone step at a time” without compromising the rule of law.

Diplomatic ties deteriorated after Canada accused India of involvement in Nijjar’s killing in 2023. Both sides expelled diplomats, and trade talks were frozen as a result.

Business leaders in Canada are pushing for renewed economic ties with India. There is a planned delegation visit scheduled for later this year or early 2026.

Anand’s remarks received criticism from the World Sikh Organisation. However, they were welcomed by Hindu groups, who called diplomatic engagement with India essential for Canada’s interests.

New Prime Minister Mark Carney is distancing Canada from pro-Khalistani politics. He aims to strengthen economic ties with India ahead of the G7 Summit, scheduled for 15-17 June.
