Mongolia’s PM Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai resigned on 3rd June after losing a confidence vote in parliament. He received only 44 of the 64 votes needed.
The vote followed public protests over reports of lavish spending by his son, sparking calls for Mongolia’s PM to step down.
Ahead of the vote, Oyun-Erdene warned that instability could threaten Mongolia’s democratic system. He admitted he had neglected political and social issues.
He had been in office for four years and had previously survived similar challenges.
Mongolia’s parliament recently expanded from 76 to 126 seats, forming a coalition government after electoral reforms.
Experts say Mongolia’s democracy is still in development. The country is struggling with economic issues and an unequal distribution of mineral wealth.
