On 6th June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Jammu and Kashmir for the first time since the Pahalgam terror attack.
He inaugurated the Chenab Bridge in Reasi — the world’s highest railway arch bridge at 359 metres above the Chenab River. Spanning 1,315 metres, it is 35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower and is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project. The bridge, built with weather-resistant steel, cost Rs 1,486 crore.
PM Modi also inaugurated the Anji Bridge — India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge, built on tough terrain — and flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains between Katra and Srinagar. The new trains will cut travel time between the cities to around 3 hours.
He dedicated the full USBRL project to the nation. The 272-km rail line includes 36 tunnels and 943 bridges and was built for Rs 43,780 crore. It aims to ensure all-weather rail connectivity to Kashmir.
In addition, PM Modi laid the foundation stones for key road projects, including the Rafiabad-Kupwara road (NH-701), the Shopian bypass (NH-444), and flyovers at the Sangrama and Bemina junctions.
He also launched the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Katra — a Rs 350 crore facility and the first medical college in Reasi. He noted that the number of MBBS seats in Jammu and Kashmir has increased to 1,300.
Tight security was in place for the visit, involving SPG, the Army, CAPFs, and local police.
