Trump Slams EU, Calls Japan ‘Tough’ on Trade; Signals Pharma Tariffs and Missile Shield Push

Trump
Trump confirmed the Oval Office meeting for 21st November.

On Tuesday, 17th June, US President Donald Trump criticised the European Union for not offering what he considers a fair trade deal. He described Japan as being “tough” in ongoing trade negotiations. Speaking aboard Air Force One after leaving the G7 summit in Canada early, Trump said the EU had been tough with the US for years. He remarked that the EU hadn’t yet made a satisfactory offer.

“We’re talking, but I don’t feel that they’re offering a fair deal yet,” Trump said. “They’re either going to make a good deal, or they’ll just pay whatever we say they have to pay.”

Regarding Japan, he said a trade deal was possible but stressed American firmness: “They’re tough, the Japanese are tough, but ultimately… we’re just going to send a letter saying, ‘this is what you’re going to pay, otherwise you don’t have to do business with us.’ There’s a chance it could happen.”

Trump also mentioned that tariffs on pharmaceuticals were on the way. He predicted it would encourage companies to return to the US, at least in part.

In addition, he noted that Canada would need to pay to be included in his proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence shield project.
