Ukraine has passed a new law allowing its citizens to hold dual or multiple citizenship. Approved by parliament on 18th June, the law aims to strengthen ties with the country’s global diaspora. It also addresses a sharp population decline exacerbated by the ongoing war with Russia.

Until now, Ukrainians with foreign passports had to give them up to become Ukrainian citizens. The new law changes that. It makes it easier for Ukrainians abroadβ€”especially the estimated 25 million in the diasporaβ€”to reconnect with their homeland.

The law will also simplify citizenship rules for children born abroad, and those who acquire another citizenship through marriage. Additionally, it benefits foreigners fighting for Ukraine. While it doesn’t ban Russians from getting Ukrainian citizenship, it gives the government power to restrict it due to the ongoing conflict.

Ukraine’s population has fallen from 52 million in 1991 to around 32 million today. Over 5 million people now live in Europe as refugees. Officials say the move is a way to support scattered Ukrainian families and those who wish to maintain a connection with their homeland.
