Train Fares Hiked After Years: 1 Paise/km for Non-AC, 2 Paise/km for AC Travel

This move is part of Indian Railways’ broader digital transformation.

For the first time in years, Indian Railways is set to hike train fares starting 1st July 2025. According to government sources, the Railway Board has proposed a minor fare increase, which is currently undergoing final approval.

Fares for non-AC Mail and Express trains will rise by 1 paise per kilometre, and AC class fares will increase by 2 paise per kilometre. For second-class travel over 500 kilometres, the hike will be half a paise per kilometre.

There will be no fare hike for suburban trains, second-class journeys under 500 km, or Monthly Season Tickets (MSTs).

This marks the first across-the-board hike since January 2020, as Indian Railways looks to ease financial pressure from rising fuel costs, expanding services, and infrastructure upgrades. Officials say the hike is modest but necessary to help cover operational expenses.

Tatkal Booking Changes:

Starting 1st July, Aadhaar authentication will be mandatory for booking Tatkal tickets via IRCTC’s website and app. From 15th July, online Tatkal bookings will also require Aadhaar-based OTP verification.

In addition, authorised agents will be restricted from booking Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of sales — from 10:00 to 10:30 AM for AC classes, and 11:00 to 11:30 AM for non-AC classes.
