Zoho Corporation has purchased Asimov Robotics, a Kochi-based firm that builds service and industrial robots, as part of a larger effort to extend its R&D footprint in India.
The statement was made on July 2 during the opening of Zoho’s research and development centre in Kerala’s Kottarakkara.
Jayakrishnan T founded Asimov Robotics in 2012, and the company creates humanoid robots, healthcare and assistive robots, and robotic systems for industrial automation and disaster management.
The firm garnered national notoriety by developing hospital robots during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has collaborated with several institutes on robotics research and implementation.
The acquisition complements Zoho’s focus on artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and deep-tech innovation.
The business stated that the Kottarakkara facility will be committed to cutting-edge R&D in these sectors, with a focus on developing skills domestically and making India self-sufficient in essential technologies.
Shailesh Davey, co-founder and CEO of Zoho Corp, said, “This campus will strengthen our R&D capabilities, starting with AI and robotics. We will also collaborate with like-minded deep-tech organisations to amplify our efforts.”
He stated that the company’s mission is to foster innovation in rural India while also addressing high-end technological difficulties.
Zoho has collaborated with the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) to create a “deep-tech product studio” to allow startups and researchers to work on cutting-edge technology. Zoho is the programme’s first industrial partner, offering coaching and collaborating with participants on real-world applications.
Zoho has announced R&D collaborations with Boson Motors, Vipus Advanced Materials, vTitan, Zentron Labs, Verdant Telemetry & Antenna Systems, Netrasemi, Energy 24by7, and IIT-Bombay in fields such as sustainable energy, semiconductors, healthcare technology, and advanced materials.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan opened the Kottarakkara campus. The ceremony was attended by Zoho co-founder Sridhar Vembu, US CEO Tony Thomas, and a number of ministers.
