China has backed Russia’s proposal to revive the long-inactive Russia-India-China (RIC) trilateral group, saying it would benefit regional and global peace and stability.
Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko recently stated that Moscow is in talks with both India and China to revive the RIC format, describing the absence of such cooperation as “inappropriate.” He expressed hope that all three countries would resume working together once relations allow for it.
Responding to this, China’s Foreign Ministry stated that it supports trilateral cooperation and is ready to maintain close contact with both Russia and India to advance the initiative.
The RIC mechanism has been on hold since the COVID-19 pandemic and the India-China military standoff in Eastern Ladakh in 2020, which froze bilateral ties. Relations began to improve after a meeting between PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping last year at the BRICS summit.
Russia, which maintains strong ties with both India and China, has shown renewed interest in reviving the RIC amid growing tensions between India and China, India’s participation in the US-led Quad, and its closer ties with the EU.
Analysts say Russia’s presence could help bridge gaps between India and China, and that the RIC format remains relevant given its role in launching BRICS and the New Development Bank.
