Alibaba Group has launched Qwen3-Coder, its most advanced open-source AI model for software development. The company states that the new tool is designed to handle tasks such as code generation and managing complex coding workflows, making it a powerful assistant for developers.
This launch comes as competition in the global AI space intensifies, particularly among Chinese tech firms vying to develop cutting-edge models. Alibaba claims Qwen3-Coder is particularly strong in “agentic AI coding tasks”,βwhere AI systems can independently work through programming problems without constant human input.
Performance data shared by Alibaba shows Qwen3-Coder outperforming other Chinese models, including those by DeepSeek and Moonshot AI’s K2, across several key coding benchmarks. The company also stated that in certain areas, its model performs on par with top US-based models, such as Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s GPT-4.
By releasing Qwen3-Coder as open-source, Alibaba is aiming to support broader adoption and innovation in AI-driven software development.
