On 7th August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to reaffirm their commitment to strengthening the India-Brazil strategic partnership.
They discussed enhancing cooperation in trade, technology, energy, defence, agriculture, health, and cultural exchanges.
President Lula also raised concerns about the “imposition of unilateral tariffs.” Both leaders discussed regional and global issues and agreed to maintain regular contact.
The call came amid rising trade tensions with the US, which has imposed steep 50% tariffs on both India and Brazil. The US has accused India of supporting Russia’s war through oil imports, while Brazil faces additional sanctions.
China has demonstrated strong diplomatic support for Brazil, emphasising BRICS unity amid US pressure. Brazil has successfully secured some tariff exemptions through careful diplomacy and diverse exports, providing a possible example for India as it navigates similar challenges.
