Lucknow is set for a major metro boost with the Union Cabinet approving Phase-1B of the city’s Metro project for Rs 5,801 crore. Announced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw after the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 12th August, the new phase will add 11.165 km to the network, connecting Charbagh in East Lucknow to Vasant Kunj in the West.

Scheduled for completion in five years, Phase-1B will expand the city’s operational metro network to 34 km. The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation, a joint venture between the Centre and the state government, will implement the project.

The stretch will feature 12 stations — seven underground and five elevated. This improvement will enhance connectivity in some of the city’s oldest and most congested areas. It will link key commercial zones like Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj, and Chowk. Additionally, it will connect major landmarks such as King George’s Medical University, Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara, Bhool Bhulaiya, Clock Tower, and Rumi Darwaza.

The government stated that the project will enhance public transportation. Furthermore, it will stimulate economic activity, boost tourism, and improve urban mobility for residents and visitors.

The existing Phase-1A of the Lucknow Metro spans 22.87 km from CCS Airport to Munshi Pulia. It includes 21 stations and has been operational since 2019.
