Apple is preparing a major push in artificial intelligence with new hardware and software. This includes home robots, a redesigned Siri, smart displays, and security cameras, Bloomberg reported.
Central to the plan is a tabletop robot, targeted for 2027. It features an iPad-sized screen on a motorised arm that can swivel to follow users. It will run a new Siri powered by large language models. This enables multi-person conversations, remembering past interactions, and providing context-aware suggestions. Apple is also testing visual โpersonalityโ options for Siri, such as animated Finder icons and Memoji avatars.
The first product in this segment is expected to be a smart speaker with a display, scheduled for release by mid-2026. Code-named J490, it will feature a new multiuser OS called Charismatic. This OS uses facial recognition to personalise widgets, apps, and content for each household member. It will support automation, music, video calls, and note-taking. There are plans to integrate the upgraded Siri later.
Apple also plans to release battery-powered security cameras, code-named J450. They feature facial recognition and infrared sensors, along with prototypes such as a smart doorbell. This is to compete with Amazonโs Ring and Google Nest.
The AI expansion comes amid slowing sales of core products. Additionally, there is criticism that Apple has lagged in generative AI, while rivals like OpenAI are making moves into hardware. The company is working on two parallel Siri upgrades โ Linwood, which uses Appleโs models, and Glenwood, which tests third-party AI. A major Siri update could arrive by spring next year.
CEO Tim Cook hinted at the upcoming products. At the same time, Senior VP Craig Federighi called the Siri revamp a โmuch bigger upgrade than we envisioned.โ He said it is Appleโs most serious project.
