China Confirms PM Modi’s SCO Summit Visit from 31st Aug to 2nd Sept

SCO Summit 2025
The event is expected to be the largest SCO gathering so far.

PM Narendra Modi will visit China for the first time in seven years to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin from 31st August to 1st September, the Chinese government confirmed on Friday.

The event is expected to be the largest SCO gathering so far, with leaders from 20 countries, including nine member states and heads of 10 international organisations.

Modi’s last visit to China was in 2018 for another SCO summit.

His upcoming trip comes amid a changing global landscape — Donald Trump’s return to the US presidency, shifting trade policies, and evolving India-China relations. While border tensions in Ladakh have eased, Beijing’s support for Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack continues to strain ties.

Before arriving in China, Modi is reportedly set to visit Japan on 30th August for the annual India-Japan Summit with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, though the Indian government has yet to confirm the two-nation tour.

During the SCO meet, Modi could have informal interactions with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, though no official bilateral meetings are on the agenda.
