Meta is doubling down on its race toward superintelligence by overhauling its artificial intelligence division for the second time. The company has carved its AI unit into four distinct teams, a move aimed at streamlining research, product development, and infrastructure to leverage billions spent on talent and computing power more effectively.

The revamped group, now called Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), will include:

• TBD Lab, led by Meta’s new Chief AI Officer, Alexandr Wang, focuses on large language models, such as Llama.

• FAIR is the long-standing research arm working on advanced AI projects.

• Products and Applied Research, led by former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, is tasked with bringing AI into consumer products.

• MSL Infra is overseeing the costly infrastructure needed to scale Meta’s AI ambitions.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been clear that Meta’s ultimate goal is to build AI systems more capable than humans. The company is prepared to invest hundreds of billions to achieve this. Wang, in his memo to employees, stressed that success depends on aligning around research, product, and infrastructure.

The reorganisation follows a hiring spree in which Meta lured dozens of top AI researchers from rivals with massive pay packages. At the same time, several senior leaders have shifted roles or exited. For instance, Loredana Crisan left for Figma, and other AI leaders were reassigned to new posts within Meta.

By consolidating teams under MSL, Meta hopes to stabilise its AI strategy. The company also aims to accelerate progress toward building the next generation of intelligent systems.
