India, now the worldโs second-largest market for ChatGPT after the US, will soon see OpenAI open its first office in New Delhi. The company has established a local entity, begun hiring, and plans to expand later this year, marking a significant step in deepening its presence in the country.
The New Delhi office will enable OpenAI to work closely with the government, developers, businesses, and academic institutions under the IndiaAI Mission, while tailoring AI tools to meet the needs of Indian users. CEO Sam Altman called India a โglobal AI leader in the making,โ citing its tech talent, thriving developer ecosystem, and strong government support.
The Indian government welcomed the move, with IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw saying OpenAIโs entry highlights the countryโs leadership in digital innovation and its role in driving AI-led transformation.
OpenAI data reveals Indiaโs rapid adoption of AI: ChatGPTโs weekly active users in the country have increased by more than four times over the past year. India ranks among the top five developer markets and boasts the largest student base on ChatGPT worldwide.
The announcement follows several India-focused rollouts, including ChatGPT Go at Rs 399 per month with UPI payments, the expansion of OpenAI Academy in collaboration with the IT Ministry, and enhanced Indic language support in GPT-5. Features like Study Mode are already gaining traction among Indian learners.
Next, OpenAI plans to host its first Education Summit in India this month, followed by a Developer Day later this year, reinforcing its commitment to affordable and accessible AI for the country.
