Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will be in Beijing on 3rd September. They will attend a grand military parade marking 80 years since the end of World War II. Leaders from Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, Mongolia, Nepal, the Maldives, and Pakistan will also attend the event. It takes place immediately after the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit 2025 in Tianjin on 31st August–1st September.

While Putin will attend the parade, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to skip it. Instead, Modi will meet Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba before heading to the SCO summit in China. This will be his first visit in seven years. His meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin will be closely watched. It comes nearly a year after both sides began easing border tensions.

India and China, once at odds, are now finding common ground against the US. The US recently imposed a 50% tax on Indian exports and penalties for buying Russian oil. This alignment is also drawing them closer to Russia, with trilateral talks expected to take place soon.

Analysts say the SCO summit will be more about optics. China aims to project a new world order less reliant on the US. The SCO includes China, India, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus. There are also 16 observer or partner nations involved.
