Shares of Engineering and construction behemoth, Larsen and Toubro (L&T) were trading 2% higher on 16 September after the company announced that it has received a ‘significant’ order worth up to Rs 2,500 crore from Nuclear Power Corporation (NPCIL) for the Kudankulam power plant in Tamil Nadu, the firm announced on 16 September, sending its shares up a percent.

L&T’s Heavy Civil Infrastructure (HCI) vertical got the order for the 2×1000 Mwe Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP 5 & 6), which included the installation of reactor and turbine systems, seawater systems, and other related equipment. The order also includes accessories such as plumbing, structural steelwork, anti-corrosion treatment, insulation, and comprehensive testing of the structures.

The HCI business is an EPC subsidiary that focuses on key civil infrastructure projects in areas such as metros and high-speed rail (HSR), tunnels, nuclear power, ports, and defence infrastructure. This company specialises in civil construction for nuclear power facilities, namely pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWR), light water reactors (LWR), and natural draft cooling towers (NDCT).

As part of the Viksit Bharat plan, India has set a target of 100 GW nuclear power capacity by 2047, which will be backed by the Nuclear Energy Mission, including large investments in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).

The Centre has been looking to improve domestic nuclear capabilities and private sector engagement in such programs.

During the June quarter earnings, L&T estimated the prospective infra order pipeline for the following nine months at Rs 7.97 trillion, a 32% increase over the previous year. This pipeline of prospects includes Rs 5.04 trillion in domestic and Rs 2.93 trillion in overseas opportunities. The Heavy Civil Infrastructure subsegment will account for 17% of total order prospects, according to the business. As of June 2025, the orderbook for this category totalled Rs 3.7 trillion.
