Delhi Targets 100% Electric Public Transport by 2026, One-Third Vehicles to Go Electric

Electric Bus
The extension runs till 31st March, 2026 for public input on the new policy.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that the city plans to switch all public transport vehicles to electric by the end of 2026. She said a new Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2.0 is being prepared to support this goal. The aim is to make Delhi a leading EV market while improving air quality.

Speaking at a Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) event, Gupta added that every third vehicle in Delhi should be electric. The government is consulting stakeholders to finalise the policy.

Delhi’s first EV policy, launched in 2020 under the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government, expired in August 2023. However, it has been extended several times. The latest extension runs through 31st March, 2026, allowing time for public input on the new policy.

Gupta also addressed road safety, saying accidents are caused by reckless drivers. She urged strict enforcement of traffic rules.

She said the government aims to build a strong EV market so people can choose from a wide range of electric vehicles. There is a clear target of a fully electric public transport fleet by 2026.
