Apple has pushed back against Elon Musk’s lawsuit, arguing that its partnership with OpenAI does not harm his AI startup, xAI. The iPhone maker said in a Texas court filing that it has every right to choose its partners and may work with other generative AI chatbots in the future.
Musk’s xAI and X Corp had sued Apple and OpenAI in August, claiming Apple’s preference for OpenAI stifled innovation and limited consumer choice. They are seeking billions in damages.
Apple, however, dismissed the case as baseless, calling the claims “speculation on top of speculation.” It argued that antitrust laws do not require it to partner with every AI provider, noting that quality, privacy, safety, and commercial terms are factors that influence such decisions.
xAI has yet to comment on Apple’s latest filing.
