French PM Sébastien Lecornu Resigns After Less Than a Month in Office

Lecornu’s cabinet picks had drawn criticism from across the political spectrum.

In a dramatic political twist, France’s new prime minister, Sébastien Lecornu, resigned on Monday, less than a month after taking office and just a day after announcing his cabinet.

The French presidency confirmed that President Emmanuel Macron has accepted his resignation.

Lecornu’s cabinet picks had drawn criticism from across the political spectrum, especially his decision to appoint former Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire as Defence Minister. Several other top posts, however, remained unchanged — Bruno Retailleau stayed on as interior minister, Jean-Noël Barrot continued as foreign minister, and Gérald Darmanin retained the justice ministry.

Trying to win consensus in the fractured National Assembly, Lecornu had pledged not to use a special constitutional power that allows a budget to pass without a parliamentary vote. Instead, he said he would seek a compromise with both left- and right-wing lawmakers.
