China Files WTO Complaint Against India Over EV and Battery Subsidies

WTO
China is Indiaโ€™s second-largest trading partner.

China has lodged a complaint against India at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) over subsidies provided for electric vehicles (EVs) and batteries.

Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said the ministry will review the detailed submissions made by China.

Officials confirmed that China has filed similar complaints against Turkiye, Canada, and the European Union (EU) as well. โ€œThey have sought consultations with India,โ€ an official said.

As per WTO procedures, seeking consultations is the first step in resolving trade disputes. If these talks fail to resolve the issue, China can request the formation of a dispute panel to rule on the issue.

China is Indiaโ€™s second-largest trading partner. In the last fiscal year, Indiaโ€™s exports to China decreased by 14.5% to $14.25 billion, down from $16.66 billion in 2023โ€“24. However, imports rose 11.52% to $113.45 billion from $101.73 billion in the previous year.

This pushed Indiaโ€™s trade deficit with China to $99.2 billion in the 2024โ€“25 fiscal year.
