After a brief burst of popularity, Zoho’s homegrown messaging app Arattai is losing momentum, slipping out of India’s top 100 apps on both Google Play and Apple’s App Store.
Once hailed as a “made-in-India” alternative to WhatsApp, Arattai had topped both charts in mid-October. This surge was driven by government support for indigenous digital tools. However, as of 4th November, it ranks 105th on Google Play and 123rd on the App Store. This is according to a Moneycontrol report.
The app’s downloads have plunged sharply — from 13.8 million in October to just 1.95 lakh so far in November. Monthly active users also fell slightly from 4.35 million in October to 4.09 million.
Launched in 2021 by Chennai-based Zoho Corp, Arattai — which means “casual talk” in Tamil — was built as a privacy-focused alternative to WhatsApp.
It saw a brief resurgence after ministers and officials endorsed Zoho’s suite of swadeshi digital tools. However, sustaining that momentum now appears to be a challenge.
