India is gearing up to build a skilled workforce to power its critical minerals mission. This move aims at cutting dependence on China and meeting the surging demand for clean energy, electric mobility, and advanced manufacturing materials.

Under the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM), the Mines Ministry and the Skill Council for the Mining Sector have launched a detailed Skills Gap Study for 2025–30. The study assesses workforce needs across exploration, extraction, processing, and value addition. A Project Steering Committee has been formed to drive the initiative and identify gaps in training and infrastructure.

The government plans to train 5.7 million workers by 2030, including new entrants and existing professionals. This effort supports the rapid growth of the mining sector. It aligns with India’s broader Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat goals to strengthen domestic capabilities.

The study will provide a roadmap for targeted skilling programmes focused on minerals like lithium, cobalt, nickel, and rare earth elements. These minerals are vital for solar panels, wind turbines, EV batteries, and electronics.

Experts believe this large-scale skill development push will boost India’s self-reliance in critical minerals. It will also make the country a key global supplier, ensuring stable supply chains and promoting sustainable mining practices.
