Trump to Meet NYC Mayor-Elect Mamdani at White House Friday

Trump
Trump confirmed the Oval Office meeting for 21st November.

In a striking political moment, President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani β€” two leaders who have openly criticised each other for months β€” are now set to meet at the White House on Friday. This will be their first face-to-face interaction since Mamdani’s surprise victory earlier this month.

Trump confirmed the meeting on Wednesday, saying it will take place in the Oval Office on 21st November. Mamdani’s team had already reached out to arrange the discussion. A spokesperson said the mayor-elect plans to focus on public safety, economic security, and affordability.

The meeting comes amid deep political tension. Trump backed Mamdani’s opponent, Andrew Cuomo, during the campaign. He even warned he would withhold federal funding if Mamdani won. New York City currently relies on $7.4 billion in federal support for fiscal year 2026, about 6.4% of its total spending.

Both leaders have frequently clashed β€” Trump has repeatedly mislabelled Mamdani a β€œcommunist.” At the same time, Mamdani centred his campaign on countering the president’s policies in the city. This was especially on immigration and the Gaza conflict.

Despite the hostility, both sides appear ready to engage as Mamdani prepares to take office on 1st January.
