The court was told that illegal mining continued despite earlier orders.

A coal mine in Asansol, West Bengal, reportedly linked to Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL), collapsed on Tuesday, 13th January, amid suspected illegal mining activity, according to CNN-News18.

Rescue teams rushed to the site as many people were feared trapped under the debris. Additionally, several were reportedly injured. The incident occurred in the Bordila area under the Kulti police station. Here, coal was allegedly being illegally extracted from an open-cast mine.

There is some confusion over the mine’s ownership. BCCL clarified to the media that the mine does not officially belong to them. They suggested this may be a case of illegal mining. However, police stated that the collapse occurred at a BCCL open-cast mine. Furthermore, BCCL teams are actively conducting rescue operations.

Officials from BCCL, along with the Kulti police team, arrived at the site after receiving information. JCB machines and other heavy equipment are being used to clear debris and aid rescue efforts.

As news spread, residents gathered around the site, heightening tension in the area. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and further details are awaited.
