Trump Sues IRS, Treasury for $10 Bn Over Tax Data Leak

The suit was filed on Thursday in a federal court in Florida.

President Donald Trump has taken legal action over what he calls a major failure to protect confidential tax records.

Trump has filed a $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the US Treasury Department. He accuses the agencies of allowing his tax information to be leaked to media outlets. The suit was filed on Thursday in a federal court in Florida. It also names Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr., and the Trump Organisation as plaintiffs.

The case stems from leaks carried out by former IRS contractor Charles Edward Littlejohn. He was sentenced in 2024 to five years in prison after pleading guilty. Littlejohn, who worked for Booz Allen Hamilton, leaked tax data of Trump and several other high-profile individuals to news organisations between 2018 and 2020.

According to the lawsuit, the disclosures caused reputational and financial harm to Trump. As a result, the leaks negatively affected his political support during the 2020 presidential election. Prosecutors have previously described the leaks as unprecedented in the IRS’s history.

The lawsuit follows the Treasury Department’s recent decision to terminate its contracts with Booz Allen Hamilton after Littlejohn’s conviction. Treasury and IRS officials have not commented on the case so far.
