After a two-year disruption, south Mumbai’s crucial east-west link is finally back in action.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday virtually inaugurated the 333-metre Tardeo–Nagpada–Mumbai Central flyover. This provides commuters with a smoother alternative route in the city’s busy southern corridor. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was present during the videoconference inauguration.
The earlier 130-year-old British-era bridge near Mumbai Central had been declared unsafe and dismantled. This led to connectivity issues over the past two years. The new flyover restores this key link. In addition, it is expected to ease congestion on Jehangir Boman Behram Road, Dr Dadasaheb Bhadkamkar Marg, Pathe Bapurao Marg and the Mahalaxmi station bridge.
The flyover measures 333 metres in total length, including 138.39 metres on the eastern side, 157.39 metres on the western side and 36.90 metres within railway limits. It has a 7-metre-wide carriageway along with wide footpaths on both sides.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) completed the project in 15 months and six days, ahead of the stipulated deadline. Work over railway tracks was handled by the railway authorities. Meanwhile, the civic body executed the remaining construction, including approach roads.
Officials said the project faced several hurdles, including utility shifting, structure removal, demolition of a housing society boundary wall, and a court case. However, with all safety certifications and approvals in place, the flyover is now ready for public use.
