After months of strained diplomacy, India and Canada are moving towards a cautious reset.

A senior Canadian official said Ottawa no longer believes India is linked to violent crimes in Canada. This marks a notable shift from earlier allegations. The remarks were made ahead of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to India. In addition, officials highlighted improved security dialogue and engagement between the two sides. According to reports, talks between national security advisers have helped build confidence. Therefore, such activities are no longer ongoing.

The softer tone comes as both countries look to revive trade discussions. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said India is ready to move forward with negotiations. He expressed hope that formal talks on a free trade agreement (FTA) could begin during Carney’s visit from 27th February to 2nd March.

Canadian officials said the visit would not have taken place if concerns over alleged foreign interference were still active. However, Canada clarified that it will continue to address transnational crime. It will also uphold the rule of law as part of a step-by-step re-engagement.

Relations had sharply deteriorated after the killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June 2023. At that time, then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau cited intelligence linking Indian agents to the incident — claims that India denied.

Carney’s trip includes talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This signals a pragmatic push to rebuild economic and strategic ties. However, some Sikh groups in Canada continue to protest the outreach.
