India is aiming to sharply expand its AI firepower.

Speaking at the Rising Bharat Summit in New Delhi on 27th February, Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the government is targeting a GPU capacity of at least 200,000 units. This move aims to strengthen its artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Under the India AI Mission — launched 23 months ago with an outlay of Rs 10,300 crore until 2029 — the government has already secured over 38,000 GPUs. These are rented to data centres at subsidised rates, sometimes as low as Rs 65 per hour. Earlier this month, Vaishnaw announced plans to add another 20,000 GPUs in the coming weeks.

According to Epoch AI, India ranked sixth globally in computing power as of May 2025. The leaders are the US and China, which together account for nearly 90% of high-end AI chips worldwide.

The government’s strategy is to build a state-backed AI stack that provides computing power, data and infrastructure. This approach is similar to how the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) scaled digital payments nationwide. The goal is to position India as a hub for affordable AI development.

At the same time, major conglomerates such as Reliance, Adani and Tata Group are investing heavily in AI infrastructure. This signals a broader push to strengthen the country’s computing capacity and support large-scale AI innovation.
