Amid escalating tensions in West Asia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2nd March spoke by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. They discussed the unfolding regional situation.
During the call, Modi conveyed Indiaβs concerns over recent developments. He stressed that the safety of civilians must remain a top priority. In addition, he also reiterated Indiaβs call for an early cessation of hostilities. He did this as he did in his post on X.
The conversation comes after the US and Israel carried out an attack on Iran that led to the killing of Iranβs Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. As a result, Iran later responded by firing missiles towards Israel and other parts of West Asia.
Earlier, Modi also spoke with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He condemned the attacks on the Gulf nation and expressed Indiaβs solidarity with the UAE.
Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress condemned the targeted assassination of Iranβs Supreme Leader. They called it a strike carried out without a formal declaration of war. In addition, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said Indiaβs foreign policy is rooted in peaceful dispute resolution and respect for international law. He also mentioned principles such as non-intervention and sovereign equality.
He added that the conflict in West Asia runs counter to Indiaβs long-standing values of non-violence and global harmony.
