The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has introduced new security rules that prohibit communication infrastructure providers from sharing or storing telecom-related data outside India.
The move is aimed at strengthening the security of the country’s telecom networks and protecting critical digital infrastructure from potential cyber threats. The new framework applies to providers that manage telecom infrastructure such as mobile towers, fibre networks, satellite gateways, data centres, and cloud-based telecom networks.
Under the rules, all telecom-related data generated in India must remain within the country, and companies will not be allowed to transfer or process such information overseas.
The DoT has also introduced a new category for Cloud-Hosted Telecommunication Network Providers (CHTNPs), bringing cloud-based telecom infrastructure under a formal regulatory framework.
These providers will be required to comply with strict security standards, including regular audits, monitoring, and data protection measures. The government will also have the authority to inspect facilities and verify compliance with the new regulations.
The latest notification builds on India’s broader push to strengthen digital sovereignty and secure critical communication infrastructure as the country rapidly expands its 5G, satellite communication, and cloud-based telecom services.
By ensuring that sensitive telecom data remains within India’s borders, the government aims to improve cybersecurity, reduce risks associated with cross-border data transfers, and enhance national security.
The new rules are expected to have a significant impact on telecom infrastructure providers and cloud service companies, requiring them to align their operations with India’s evolving data localisation and telecom security requirements while supporting the country’s long-term digital infrastructure goals.
