India’s retail lending market is witnessing a major shift, with small-ticket loans emerging as a key driver of consumer spending.
From smartphones and home appliances to furniture and electronics, more consumers are choosing easy EMI options, helping fuel demand across both urban and rural markets.
According to CRIF data, loans of Rs 50,000 and above accounted for 29% of the value of new consumer durable loan originations in the fourth quarter of FY26. This is nearly 5 percentage points higher than a year ago, indicating that consumers are increasingly relying on credit to finance discretionary purchases.
The trend is benefiting banks, NBFCs, and fintech lenders, which are using small-ticket loans to attract first-time borrowers. Once customers establish a repayment history, lenders can offer larger financial products such as personal loans, vehicle loans, or credit cards, creating long-term customer relationships.
Easy digital loan approvals, growing smartphone penetration, and flexible repayment options have also made credit more accessible, especially in Tier II and Tier III cities. This has helped expand formal lending beyond traditional metropolitan markets and supported India’s rising consumption-led growth.
While the rise in consumer credit is boosting economic activity, experts believe responsible lending and prudent borrowing will remain crucial to maintaining healthy credit quality. As more Indians embrace EMI-based purchases, small-ticket loans are expected to remain one of the biggest growth opportunities for lenders while continuing to power the country’s consumption story.
