Bajaj General Insurance and Swiss Re Corporate Solutions signed an initial pact to explore commercial insurance for Indian businesses.

The memorandum of understanding still needs formal agreements and regulatory sign-off before the partnership takes shape. Here’s the idea behind it.

Bajaj General Insurance already has a strong presence across nearly 1,500 towns and cities in India.

Swiss Re Corporate Solutions, on the other hand, is the commercial insurance arm of the Zurich-based Swiss Re Group and brings global expertise in covering large and mid-sized businesses.

Together, they plan to build structured insurance solutions aimed at Indian companies, starting with sectors like manufacturing and high-tech. One key piece of this plan involves Swiss Re’s International Programs platform.

If things move forward as planned, this would let Bajaj General offer international insurance cover to Indian firms that operate overseas, while also supporting multinational companies doing business in India.

Commercial insurance typically covers things like property damage, liability claims, and trade-related risks, along with more specialised areas such as credit and surety.

Demand for this kind of coverage has been rising steadily as Indian businesses expand globally and sectors like technology and manufacturing grow.

Swiss Re’s CEO Ivan Gonzalez said the partnership brings together local market knowledge with global risk expertise to serve corporate clients better in India.

Bajaj General Insurance’s MD and CEO, Tapan Singhel, echoed that view, saying Indian and multinational businesses alike need partners who understand both local realities and global risk standards.

This deal follows a broader trend of global insurers deepening their India presence after the government raised the foreign investment limit in insurance to 100% under the automatic route.
