India has safely managed the movement of 62 India-bound vessels through the Strait of Hormuz amid continuing tensions in West Asia.
The government has also repatriated 4,052 Indian seafarers from the Gulf region, highlighting its efforts to protect citizens and maintain the flow of essential maritime trade.
According to Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the figures were recorded as of August 3. Of the 62 vessels that successfully crossed the strategic waterway, 23 were Indian-flagged ships, and 39 were foreign-flagged vessels carrying Indian interests.
The Strait of Hormuz is particularly important for India because it connects the Persian Gulf with the wider global shipping network. A disruption in the waterway can affect the movement of crude oil, gas and other essential goods, potentially increasing transportation costs and putting pressure on energy prices.
Indian maritime authorities have been regularly updating their advisories to strengthen safety measures in response to the evolving security situation. The government has also strengthened monitoring and coordination with relevant agencies to track vessels and Indian crew members operating in the region.
The Directorate General of Shipping has additionally directed vessels to follow enhanced international security measures. Authorities have advised against deploying Indian seafarers on voyages passing through the Gulf region where security risks remain high.
The latest figures offer some reassurance that India-bound shipping continues despite the regional tensions. However, the situation remains closely watched because any prolonged disruption around Hormuz could affect India’s energy supplies, shipping costs and wider trade.
For India, keeping maritime routes open and protecting its seafarers remains critical as the West Asia conflict continues to create uncertainty across global shipping and energy markets.
