Discovered Materials, a deeptech startup using artificial intelligence to discover new materials for semiconductor chips, has raised $9 million in seed funding.

The round was led by Lightspeed India Partners, with participation from Peak XV Partners and prominent angel investors including Paul Graham, Gokul Rajaram and Thariq Shihipar.

Founded in 2026 by IIT Madras alumni Advaith Sridhar and Akash Ramdas, the startup is working on a problem that is becoming increasingly important as AI computing expands. Modern chips need to become faster and more energy efficient, but finding suitable new materials through traditional research can take years.

Discovered Materials is using AI agents to speed up this process. Its technology can help researchers identify promising materials, simulate how they could perform and support their testing and validation. The company is targeting materials that could eventually be used in next-generation semiconductor chips.

The startup has also released hundreds of materials discovered using its AI models. Alongside this, it has introduced Material Discovery Bench, a new benchmark designed to test how effectively AI agents can solve real-world semiconductor material problems.

The fresh capital will help Discovered Materials expand its technology and accelerate its work with semiconductor companies. The company is betting that AI can reduce the time and cost involved in finding materials that improve chip performance.

The funding comes as the semiconductor industry faces growing demand from AI data centres and advanced computing systems. As chips become more powerful, managing heat, energy use and performance is becoming a bigger challenge.

For Discovered Materials, the goal is to make material research faster and more practical. If successful, its AI-driven approach could help semiconductor manufacturers discover new materials that make future chips cooler, more efficient and better suited to demanding AI workloads.
