Vedanta has been named successful bidder for the 152-hectare Punnam Manganese Block in Andhra Pradesh, it said.

The block was awarded through an e-auction run by the Department of Mines and Geology, Government of Andhra Pradesh.

Vedanta received the official confirmation letter on 13 August, after completing all the required statutory compliances.

The asset itself covers 152 hectares and currently sits at the G4 stage of exploration, an early phase that typically comes before more detailed resource assessment. Vedanta hasn’t disclosed several key details around the deal.

There’s no word yet on the estimated manganese reserves at the site, the planned production capacity, how much the company intends to spend developing it, or a timeline for when mining might begin.

The bid amount itself wasn’t mentioned in the filing either. What the company has said is more about intent than numbers.

Vedanta noted the block will strengthen its diversified metals and mining portfolio, and pitched the acquisition as a step toward boosting India’s domestic manganese supply.

Manganese is a key input for steel production, and India has been trying to build up domestic mineral supply chains lately to cut down on import dependence for critical industrial inputs.

This deal fits squarely into that pattern. The timing is worth noting too. The Punnam win lands right after Vedanta posted its first quarterly results since completing its demerger.

Profit for the June quarter rose to Rs 5,294 crore from Rs 4,267 crore the previous quarter, and EBITDA margins expanded to 35.1% from 30.7% over the same period.

Fresh mineral assets and improving quarterly numbers, both landing in the same week, say something about where the company’s focus currently sits.
