Exide Invests Rs 200 Crore More in EV Battery Arm EESL

Exide Industries has infused nearly Rs 200 crore more into its battery unit EESL, taking total investment past Rs 5,100 crore.

The fresh capital came through a rights issue. Exide subscribed to 5,71,42,857 equity shares of Rs 10 each, at a premium of Rs 25 per share, working out to just under Rs 200 crore in total.

Once this is added in, Exide’s cumulative investment in EESL, including share premium, comes to Rs 5,102.23 crore. Nothing changes on the ownership side.

EESL stays a fully owned subsidiary of Exide, so this is simply the parent putting more money into a business it already controls entirely.

The plan to fund EESL this way goes back to a board decision from 30 January this year, when Exide’s directors approved putting in up to Rs 1,400 crore across multiple tranches.

The money is earmarked for a large lithium-ion cell manufacturing plant that EESL is building from the ground up in Bengaluru, along with covering the subsidiary’s day to day working capital needs.

EESL itself is still in its early, capital intensive phase. For the year ended March 2026, the company reported turnover of Rs 157.56 crore, but posted a net loss of Rs 248.16 crore.

Its net worth stood at Rs 3,991.06 crore as of that date. Turnover in the two years before that was Rs 116.89 crore and Rs 239.14 crore respectively, so the business is still scaling up rather than turning a profit.

Exide is one of India’s largest battery manufacturers, and this lithium-ion push through EESL is its bet on the electric vehicle and energy storage market going forward.

As of 13:05 pm on 19 August, Exide Industries shares were trading at Rs 460.60 on the NSE, down 1.00% for the day, after touching an intraday high of Rs 470.65 earlier in the session.
